Prime Minister Barzani meets Patriarch of Assyrian Church of the East

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) – Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani received the Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East, His Holiness Mar Gewargis III Sliwa, and his accompanying delegation that included bishops from other countries. 

The meeting was also attended by Kurdistan Regional Government ministers and officials.

Prime Minister Barzani congratulated the delegation on the occasion of the opening of the new church in Diana in the Soran district. He stated that the Kurdistan Region is proud of its culture of peaceful coexistence among its communities.

The delegation thanked Prime Minister Barzani and the institutions of the Kurdistan Regional Government for supporting their activities and for sheltering and protecting a large number of displaced people without discrimination. They commended the culture of coexistence in the Kurdistan Region.

Prime Minister Barzani presented a brief overview of the political situation in the region and the threat of the reemergence of ISIS. He hoped that security and stability will return to war devastated areas of Iraq and the displaced people will be able to go back to their places of origin.

He also stressed KRG’s continued support to their church and all other churches and religions in the Kurdistan Region.

Prime Minister Barzani receives U.S. Consul General

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) – Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani received U.S. Consul General to the Kurdistan Region Steven Fagin and his accompanying delegation.

They discussed the political situation in Iraq in general and the Kurdistan Region in particular, including the process of formation of the new cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Prime Minister Barzani presented a brief overview of the agreement reached between the political parties on the activation of the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region and the formation of the new cabinet.

They also discussed improvement in relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad and the efforts to resolve outstanding issues.

The current conditions of Mosul and the disputed areas as well as the post ISIS situation were highlighted. They emphasized the importance of cooperation and coordination between the Kurdistan Region, Baghdad and the Coalition forces to prevent the re-emergence of terrorism.

The situation of the internally displaced people and their return to their homes were also discussed in the meeting.

Prime Minister Barzani receives British Ambassador

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) – Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani received British Ambassador to Iraq, Jon Wilks and British Consul General to the Kurdistan Region, Martin Warr.

The general situation in the region, political and security stability in Iraq, and the condition of the displaced people in the Kurdistan Region were discussed.

They stressed that negotiations and dialogue are the only way to maintain security and stability in the region.

Ambassador Wilks commended Prime Minister Barzani for his role in improving the relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad and settlement of some issues between the two sides. They also discussed bilateral relations.

Ambassador Wilks gave a brief overview of his visit to IDP and refugee camps in Duhok and highlighted the issue of displaced persons’ return to their places of origin.

The process of the formation of the new cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government was also discussed.

Prime Minister Barzani meets with UN Envoy

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani received Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, and her accompanying delegation.

Prime Minister Barzani presented a brief overview of the the political situation, including the agreement among the Region’s political parties regarding the three presidencies – President of the Kurdistan Region, Speaker of the Iraqi Kurdistan Parliament, and Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad and resolving the outstanding issues were discussed.

Ms. Hennis-Plasschaert welcomed the agreement among Kurdistan parties and the improvement of relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad.

They discussed the situation of the disputed areas, stressing the need for improved security with coordination between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad so displaced people could return to their homes.

The situation of the greater region, including Syria and Iran, was also discussed.
