President Barzani Appoints Vice Presidents of the Kurdistan Region

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, 10 September 2019 – Chief of Staff of the Kurdistan Region Presidency, Fawzi Hariri, announced today that the President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani issued the decree on the appointment of two vice presidents of the Kurdistan Region. Mr. Hariri made the announcement in a statement Tuesday. Below is the text of the statement:

The President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani issued a decree to appoint Mr. Jaafar Mustafa Ali and Mr. Mustafa Qadir Mustafa as Vice Presidents of the Kurdistan Region on Sunday, 8 September 2019.

Prime Minister Barzani chairs meeting to discuss government priorities

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) – Prime Minister Masrour Barzani today chaired a meeting of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to discuss a range of key priorities.

The meeting approved an essential overhaul of the Kurdistan Region’s taxation system and agreed further actions regarding the KRG’s engagement with the federal government of Iraq.

The meeting discussed the formation of a special committee to oversee preparations for the Iraqi national census in 2020.

The KRG agreed to send a delegation to Baghdad next week to ensure the Kurdistan Region’s interests are represented in the 2020 Iraqi budget. The government will invite Iraq’s finance, oil and gas, and legal parliamentary committees for further in-depth discussions.

A government delegation is due to update the Kurdistan Parliament on the progress of talks between the KRG and the Iraqi government on Thursday.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani receives Iraq’s Minister of Planning

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) – Prime Minister Masrour Barzani today received the Minister of Planning for Iraq, Nouri Sabah al-Dulaimi.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Barzani and the Minister agreed that improved relations between Erbil and Baghdad have opened a path to constructive dialogue.

Prime Minister Barzani emphasised that talks with the Baghdad government are focused on promoting the Kurdistan Region’s rights as enshrined in the constitution.

Prime Minister Barzani and the Minister discussed the importance of the 2020 Iraqi national census. Prime Minister Barzani affirmed that the census should remain a neutral tool, not to be utilised against any section of Iraq’s population.

Minister al-Dulaimi praised the progress made by the Kurdistan Regional Government over the last decade, describing the KRI as a model for successful reform in the Middle East.

Kurdistan Region President Meets Top UN Official in Iraq

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, 9 September 2019 – President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani met with Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, United Nations Secretary-General Special Representative for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

During the meeting, President Barzani commended the role of the United Nations and highlighted the significance of the continuation of UNAMI’s support to federal Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Both sides discussed different issues, including Erbil-Baghdad relations, next year’s budget of Iraq, the situation in Kirkuk and its participation in the provincial elections, disputed areas and Article 140 of the Constitution of Iraq, the security situation of Iraq, the condition of refugees and their return to their homes, and the situation of Yezidis and the status of Shengal (Sinjar).

Head of DFR Minister Safeen Dizayee meets Britain’s Ambassador to Iraq Jon Wilks

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (dfr.gov.krd) – Minister Safeen Dizayee on 2nd September received Britain’s Ambassador to Iraq Jon Wilks, accompanied by Mr. James Thornton, the UK’s Consul General in the Kurdistan Region.

Ambassador Wilks and  Minister Dizayee, the Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Department of Foreign Relations (DFR), highlighted areas of mutual interest and common concern where the Kurdistan Region and Britain can deepen ties and increase cooperation, including the political, economic, investment, cultural, security and humanitarian fields, as well as education, capacity building, and private sector promotion.

Minister Dizayee reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s unwavering commitment to strengthening its bilateral relations and development cooperation with Britain. He also briefed Ambassador Wilks on improving Erbil-Baghdad ties and cooperation based on mutual understanding, as well as on recent developments in Iraq and the Region.

Ambassador Wilks congratulated Minister Dizayee on his appointment and wished him success in performing his duties.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani receives a high delegation of Iraqi Interior Ministry

During the meeting, which was attended by KRG Minister of Interior, Al-Yasiri, welcomed the positive atmosphere between Erbil and Baghdad, pointing out that there is a good understanding between the Federal Ministry of Interior and the KRG Ministry of Interior, and stressed that all outstanding issues should be solved in accordance with the constitution.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister thanked the Federal Minister of Interior for the coordination and cooperation between both ministries. The two sides also touched on the issue of entry payment fees of ten thousand dinars by Iraqi tourists.

Prime Minister Barzani explained that the issue of entry cards was to protect security in the Kurdistan Region, and that the fees were not imposed on nationality only, but included all citizens outside the region.

Prime Minister Barzani pointed out that the mechanism for issuing the card for tourists coming to the region will change its name to (security guarantee), and ordered to lift fees on tourists from central and southern Iraq.

New French Consul General assumes office in Kurdistan Region

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (dfr.gov.krd) – Minister Safeen Dizayee received Mr Olivier Decottignies, new Consul General of the Republic of France to the Kurdistan Region who visited KRG Department of Foreign Relations for taking up his new duties in Erbil.

Head of KRG Department of Foreign Relations Minister Dizayee welcomed Mr Decottignies and wished him success in performing his duties in the Region, and affirmed KRG DFR’s full support to further expanding of Kurdistan Region and Republic of France ties at all levels.

Minister Dizayee said that the Kurdistan Region and Republic of France connect with good ties of friendship. Both sides also stressed the mutual willingness to further enhance their bilateral cooperation and ties.

EU Head of Liaison Office Ms. Clarisse PASZTORY ends her tenure in Erbil

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (dfr.gov.krd) – Head of the European Union Liaison Office Mr. Clarisse PASZTORY met at the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Department of Foreign Relations (DFR) Minister Safeen Dizayee Head of DFR on the occasion of completion of her term in Erbil.

At the meeting, Head of DFR Minister Dizayee thanked Ms. PASZTORY for her role in developing KRG and EU institutions through humanitarian aid, capacity building, sharing experience and expertise and wished her success in her future postings.

Ms. PASZTORY thanked DFR and KRG institutions for their support in strengthening of bilateral cooperation between the two sides.

Minister Dizayee and Ms. PASZTORY exchanged views on the current developments in the Region and priorities of the KRG’s work program.

President Barzani issued the following message on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha

On the occasion of Eid Al-Adha, I extend my warmest congratulations to the families of martyrs, Anfal Genocide victims, our gallant Peshmergas, our pilgrims and all Muslims in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and all the world. I hope this Eid will bring happiness and good blessings to everyone.

All ethnic and religious groups of the Kurdistan Region have used Eids and occasions as a means to renew their commitment to the values of coexistence, tolerance and harmony and to portray the high values of our culture. I hope this Eid and the upcoming ones will deepen and protect this culture and the human values, and strengthen harmony and cooperation for a better future for all.

I urge everyone to cooperate in complying with the traffic instructions, help in safeguarding citizens and guests, conserving the environment and the nature of Kurdistan.

Safeen Dizayee takes office as the New Head of KRG Department of Foreign Relations

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (dfr.gov.krd) – In a meeting with the senior Kurdistan Regional Government officials at the KRG Department of Foreign Relations on Sunday 21 July, Minister Safeen Dizayee assumed office as the new Head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations, taking over from former Minister and Head of DFR, Falah Mustafa.

The meeting included Shaban Shaban Chali, Chief of staff to the Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, Dr. Omed Sabah, Chief of staff to the Council of Ministers, and Dr. Amanj Raheem, Secretary of the Council of Ministers, Ms. Siham Mamand, Assistant Head of DFR, and DFR’s senior advisors and directors.

Falah Mustafa, former Minister and Head of DFR, congratulated the attendees on joining the new government and thanked all the associates who have stood by him over the past 13 years. He congratulated Minister Safeen Dizayee on taking office as the new Head of the KRG DFR, and wished him success in serving the people.

Minister Dizayee commended Falah Mustafa’s many achievements over years of service to the people and government of Kurdistan and his success in strengthening relations between the KRG and foreign governments during his tenure. He asked the DFR staff to draw up appropriate plans for expanding the KRG’s foreign relations.
