Prime Minister Barzani meets with UN Envoy

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani received Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, and her accompanying delegation.

Prime Minister Barzani presented a brief overview of the the political situation, including the agreement among the Region’s political parties regarding the three presidencies – President of the Kurdistan Region, Speaker of the Iraqi Kurdistan Parliament, and Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad and resolving the outstanding issues were discussed.

Ms. Hennis-Plasschaert welcomed the agreement among Kurdistan parties and the improvement of relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad.

They discussed the situation of the disputed areas, stressing the need for improved security with coordination between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad so displaced people could return to their homes.

The situation of the greater region, including Syria and Iran, was also discussed.

Prime Minister Barzani meets Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) – Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani received Turkey’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, and his accompanying delegation, including Turkish Ambassador to Iraq Fatih Yildiz, and Turkish Consul General to the Kurdistan Region Hakan Karacay. The meeting was also attended by a number of KRG officials.

Among topics discussed were strengthening bilateral relations, increasing trade and border crossings, continuing coordination and cooperation against terrorism, the situation in Kirkuk and other disputed areas, and the general situation in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

Prime Minister Barzani thanked Turkey for its support to the Kurdistan Region during difficult times. He expressed the KRG’s desire to strengthen relations with Turkey and its willingness to facilitate Turkish investment in the Region. He described the relations between the Kurdistan Region and Turkey as important and strategic.

Minister Çavuşoğlu stressed that his country did not turn its back on the Kurdistan Region during difficult times and looked forward to further strengthening relations. He said that Turkish companies can invest in the Region and participate in construction, especially in areas affected by the war against ISIS.

He also pointed to his meetings with Iraqi officials in Baghdad and highlighted the importance of cooperation and coordination between Iraq and Turkey on water issue.

Kurdistan Regional and Iraqi Federal governments meet in Erbil

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) – The Kurdistan Regional Government and the Iraqi Federal Government met in Erbil. The Iraqi Federal Government delegation was led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Dr. Fuad Hussein and included federal ministers of planning, agriculture, industry and trade. The Kurdistan Regional Government, KRG, delegation was headed by Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and included Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council Masrour Barzani and a number of ministers and adviders.

Prime Minister Barzani reacalled the Kurdistan Region being a political entity under the Iraqi Constiturion, and deemed that it should be dealt with according to this principle and its constitutional rights be respected. At the same time he reiterated KRG’s commitment to fully cooperate with the Iraqi Federal Government in resolving outstanding issues, especially those affecting the interests of all Iraqi people.

He reaffirmed the KRG’s full support to Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi. He stressed the Kurdistan Region’s hope for progress in the rest of Iraq and expressed the KRG’s willingness to support growth of a national economy that enables improvement in the lives of everyone in the country.

They discussed the outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, stressing the need for a serious dialogue in this regard.

At this meeting in Erbil of the Iraqi Economic Council issues pertaining to the economy, customs, quality control, and other topics were discussed.

They stressed to continue working on the remaining outsanding issues, which need further talks and formation of special committees, particularly those issues which have legal dimentions. In this regard, they demmed necessary that the Iraqi Kurdistan Parliament issues resolutions on amending and implementing some Iraqi federal laws in the Kurdistan Region.

Prime Minister Barzani and U.S. Vice President discuss developments in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) – Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani held a phone call with U.S. Vice President Mike Pence.

They discussed the latest security developments in the disputed territories and the political situation in the Kurdistan Region.
Prime Minister Barzani stressed the importance of U.S. support to the Region’s security, stability and the return of more than one million displaced Iraqis.

He gave a brief overview about the formation of the next cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government as well as relations between the Region and Baghdad towards solving outstanding issues in accordance with the Constitution. He expressed appreciation and gratitude for U.S. support in the fight against terrorism.

Vice President Pence  commended the role of the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces in the fight against terrorism, and praised the people and Kurdistan Regional Government for protecting, accommodating, and providing assistance to such a large number of IDPs and refugees. He also commended Prime Minister Barzani for protecting religious communities who suffered from ISIS. He also extended condolences to the families of those martyred in the fight against terrorism.

Vice President Pence also stressed the importance of continued cooperation and coordination between the Kurdistan Region and Iraq with the support of the United States in confronting terrorism that continues to threaten the security and stability of the country.

Prime Minister Barzani receives U.S. Congressional Delegation

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) – Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani received a United States congressional delegation and the U.S. Consul General to the Kurdistan Region Steven Fagin. Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani also attended the meeting.

They discussed the political and security situation of the region in general, the situation of displaced persons who fled terrorism, and relations between the Kurdistan Region and the United States.

The delegation stressed United States support to the Kurdistan Region. They commended the role of the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces in the fight against terrorism, and praised the people and government of the Kurdistan Region for protecting, accommodating, and providing assistance to a very large number of IDPs and refugees.

Prime Minister Barzani emphasized the desire of the Kurdistan Region for further strengthening of the relations of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq with the United States. He thanked the United States for its support, particularly in the fight against ISIS. He also stressed the willingness of the Kurdistan Region in confronting any threat of terrorism with coordination and cooperation between the Kurdistan Region, Baghdad, and the international coalition.

Prime Minister Barzani gave a brief overview of economic and financial constraints faced in recent years and highlighted indications of the Region’s recovery and the welcoming investment opportunities.

Regarding reform programmes initiated in various sectors, he said the KRG would benefit from the experience of friendly countries.
Also discussed were the situation in areas affected by the war against ISIS, return of IDPs to their places of origin, and improvement in relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad.

Prime Minister Barzani receives U.S. delegation

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) – Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani received U.S. Deputy Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS William Roebuck, U.S. Consul General to the Kurdistan Region Steven Fagin, and their accompanying delegation.

They discussed the political and security situation of the Kurdistan Region, US-led coalition’s training of Peshmerga forces, and security cooperation with Baghdad in facing threats of reemergence of ISIS terrorism.

They also discussed the political process in Iraq, improvement of relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, as well as the formation of the next cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

The two sides also stressed strengthening bilateral relations.

Political and security developments in the wider region, particularly in Syria and relations with neighboring countries were also discussed.

Prime Minister Barzani and Iraq’s Parliament Speaker discuss political developments

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) – Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani received the Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives Muhammad Al Halbusi. The meeting was also attended by the Speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament Ms. Vala Farid and a number of officials.

They discussed the political situation in Iraq in general and latest developments in the Nineveh province in particular. They stressed the importance of cooperation and coordination between the relevant institutions to reconstruct the areas destroyed by the war against ISIS.

They also discussed the situation of the displaced Iraqis who fled ISIS war zones and took refuge in the Kurdistan Region. They stressed the importance of cooperation between the Iraqi government and the international community to help the displaced to return to their places of origin and reconstruct the destroyed areas.

The improvement of relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad and efforts to resolve outstanding issues were also discussed in the meeting.

KRG Council of Ministers congratulates Christians on Easter

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) – The Kurdistan Regional Government Council of Ministers congratulates all Christians on the occasion of Easter.

Following is the text of the statement:

On the occasion of Easter, we extend our warmest congratulations to our Christian brothers and sisters in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the world. We wish them a Happy Easter in safety and prosperity.

On this occasion, we emphasize that the Kurdistan Regional Government, as always, is working to further consolidate and deepen the culture of coexistence, tolerance, and warm acceptance among all religious and ethnic communities throughout Kurdistan. Our culture is a source of pride for all the people of Kurdistan and is widely appreciated. Our culture will continue endeavoring to achieve equality, as well as provide and protect the rights of all Kurdistan’s communities.

Once again, we congratulate our Christian sisters and brothers on the occasion of Easter in the Kurdistan Region. We look forward to celebrating coming events in more stable conditions far from war, violence and terrorism, in a prosperous Kurdistan.

Prime Minister Barzani receives Russia’s new Consul General

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) – Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani received the new Consul General of the Russian Federation to the Kurdistan Region, Mr. Oleg Levin.

Prime Minister Barzani congratulated Consul General Levin for his new position and wished him success in his duties. He expressed his government’s desire to further develop relations with the Russian Federation, especially in the fields of trade, agriculture, electricity and tourism.

He gave a brief overview about the political situation in the Kurdistan Region and the current efforts to form the new cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Prime Minister Barzani receives IICO delegation

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) – Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani received the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO), Dr. Abdullah Matouq Al-Matouq, and his accompanying delegation.

They discussed the situation of internally displaced people and refugees who took refuge in the Kurdistan Region and their needs were highlighted. Increasing assistance to this population by NGOs and international agencies was stressed.

Dr. Al-Matouq highlighted his visit to IDP camps and the aid which has been provided in the past by the IICO and the Kuwait government. He said he will convey the needs of the Kurdistan Region to international forums.

Prime Minister Barzani expressed his thanks for the assistance provided by IICO and Kuwait. He stressed that the Kurdistan Region needs from the international community and the Iraqi government to meet the requirements of the displaced people, especially in the fields of education and health, including psychological treatment.

The humanitarian situation in Mosul and the difficulties charitable organizations face, were also discussed.
