The representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government to Spain, Mr. Daban Shadala, made ​​an official visit to Portugal, during which he held meetings with officials and private sector representatives. This was the first official visit that Mr. Shadala has made to Portugal. Mr. Shadala went with the objective of establishing the first official contact with the Portuguese government and private sector entities, and to determine if there are points of interest for future cooperation in the areas of education, culture, politics and business.

The tourism sector in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan Region has grown faster than expected, with 15,000 tourist facilities completed before time, officials said. The three-province enclave in northern Iraq is populated by ethnic Kurds who have taken advantage of the autonomy granted to them following the 2003 US-led invasion that toppled dictator Saddam Hussein in Baghdad, and transformed their region into an oasis of relative tranquility and booming economic growth.

Dr Salahalddin Saeed Ali, President of the University of Sulaimani, last week headed a delegation of University rectors from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to begin an array of meetings with a number of Spanish academic institutions. This marked the first official visit by university rectors of the Kurdistan Region to Spain.

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Housing and Reconstruction, Kamaran Ahmed Abdullah this week met with Spain’s Secretary of State for Trade Mr Jaime Garcia-Legaz. Mr Ahmed formed part of the ministerial delegation that was headed by Deputy Prime Minister of the KRG, Emad Ahmad.

To conclude his first official visit to Spain, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Mr Emad Ahmad held a conference last week in Casa Arabe to an audience made up largely of representatives from political think tanks and research centres. Mr Ahmad presented the political and economic situation of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and discussed the potential for cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and Spain.

Deputy Prime Minister Emad Ahmad Sayfour and a senior ministerial delegation will today meet with Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Mr José Manuel García-Margallo. This visit marks the first official visit by the Deputy Prime Minister to Spain. The mission has been largely organised by the Kurdistan Regional Government Representation office in Madrid in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.
