In the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan, to the north of the country, the capital Erbil has been transformed from a dismal, impoverished place to a cosmopolitan city. Kurdistan’s safety, compared to the rest of Iraq, means the area is also emerging as popular tourist destination.

The representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government to Spain, Mr. Daban Shadala, made ​​an official visit to Portugal, during which he held meetings with officials and private sector representatives. The tourism sector in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan Region has grown faster than expected, with 15,000 tourist facilities completed before time, officials said. The three-province enclave in northern Iraq is populated by ethnic Kurds who have taken advantage of the autonomy granted to them following the 2003 US-led invasion that toppled dictator Saddam Hussein in Baghdad, and transformed their region into an oasis of relative tranquility and booming economic growth.

Dr Salahalddin Saeed Ali, President of the University of Sulaimani, last week headed a delegation of University rectors from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to begin an array of meetings with a number of Spanish academic institutions. This marked the first official visit by university rectors of the Kurdistan Region to Spain.
