As the first Kurdistan Regional Government Representation Office to Spain it is our aim to build upon the success of the Kurdistan Region’s foreign relations and to further the interests of the Region in the international arena.
Spain is a strategically and historically important country, and by establishing a representative office here, the KRG is taking an important step in raising the profile of the Kurdistan Region within the Spanish speaking world. This is especially important in Spain, as from my current experience here, there seems to be little or no awareness of the Kurdish nation or the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The same also applies in Kurdistan where peoples understanding and knowledge of Spain is at best basic.
To change this, I aim to make the KRG Spain office the first point of contact for the Spanish public and private sectors as well as the general public. We need to set a strong foundation in order to build long and lasting relations between Spain and the Kurdistan Region.
Through this office we will introduce to Spain, the culture, history, economy and political developments of the Kurdistan Region. We aim to foster a strong relationship with the Spanish government, the regional autonomies, cultural and educational institutions, as well as the Spanish private sector.
As the KRG representative, it is my duty to facilitate, to the best of my abilities, relations in the areas of trade and tourism, education and science, and art and culture. Both the Kurdistan Region and Spain can benefit greatly from each other in these areas.
The Kurdistan Region is a stable, resource-rich, emerging market, with excellent opportunities across all sectors of the economy. The Region has a liberal investment law and welcomes foreign investment, offering investors a number of incentives, including customs relief, tax holidays and the freedom to repatriate profits.
Kurdistan engages positively with the wider international community both commercially and politically. Countries such as Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Japan have consulates and trade missions based in the Regional capital, Erbil. Investors from these countries, and more, are taking advantage of the opportunities available in Kurdistan, and as Kurdistan is the secure gateway to all Iraq, early investors in the Region will be in a strong position to expand to the rest of the country in the future.
It is time that Spain and its private sector join the increasing number of investors in the Kurdistan Region, and KRG Spain is here to serve as the first point of contact to the Region.
