A statement from Kurdistan Region President

The President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani condemned the recent attack against the United States Embassy in the Iraqi capital, in a statement released today. Below is the full statement:

We condemn the rocket attack that targeted the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad last night. These actions threaten Iraq’s stability and interests, and if continued, they will have severe consequences on the country.

Protecting the security of diplomatic missions is the duty of the Iraqi authorities. Violating the international rules and regulations by targeting diplomats and diplomatic missions must be prevented. We reiterate that Iraq should not become a battleground for regional and international forces.

President Nechirvan Barzani and U.S. President Donald Trump discuss developments in Iraq and the region

U.S. President Donald Trump described the people of Kurdistan as a great people and said, ‘We are indebted to you.’ The U.S. President also reiterated the gratitude and appreciation of his country for the Kurdistan Region and the Peshmerga for their role in defeating ISIS and protecting ethnic and religious communities in Kurdistan.

On Wednesday January 22, in Davos, Switzerland, the Kurdistan Region President and the U.S. President held a meeting in which they discussed the situation in Iraq as well as Kurdistan Region’s relations with the United States.

They discussed energy cooperation, Erbil-Baghdad ties, the danger of the resurgence of terrorism and how to confront it. They also discussed developments in the broader Middle East, Kurdistan Region’s relations with regional countries and the situation in Syria.

In the meeting, Kurdistan Region President, on behalf of the people of Kurdistan, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to President Trump and the United States for supporting the Kurdistan Region in the fight against ISIS. The President emphasized that terrorism remains a genuine threat and that it is crucial that the international coalition continues with its mission.

President Nechirvan Barzani also outlined Kurdistan’s recent history, from the 1991 popular uprising until the liberation of Iraq and the period after 2003, including the role of the Kurdistan Region in reinstituting the new Iraq. The President also expressed Kurdistan Region’s willingness to further strengthen relations with the United States in various fields.

President Nechirvan Barzani meets with Armenia’s President Sarkissian

In his meeting with Armenian President Armen Sarkissian , President Nechirvan Barzani discussed ways to strengthen ties with Armenia and spoke about Kurdistan Region’s conducive environment for Armenian investments.

On Tuesday, January 21, Kurdistan Region President met with Armenian President Armen Sarkissian in Davos, Switzerland.

In the meeting, Erbil-Baghdad relations and dialogue to resolve the pending issues, latest developments in the region and the escalation of tension and the importance of restoring peace, and opportunities to further strengthen bilateral relations were discussed.

President Nechirvan Barzani meets with Swedish Foreign Minister Linde

Davos, Switzerland, January 21, 2020

President Nechirvan Barzani expressed gratitude for Sweden’s support to the Kurdistan Region as part of the international coalition against ISIS and the Swedish humanitarian assistance to the refugees and IDPs in the Kurdistan Region. The president also expressed the Kurdistan Region’s willingness to further expand relations with Sweden.

On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Kurdistan Region President met with the Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Lindh, on Tuesday, January 21.

In the meeting, the Kurdistan Region relations with Sweden, the condition of the refugees and the displaced people in the Kurdistan Region and the ways to assist them, the demonstrations and the latest developments in Iraq and the broader region were discussed.

The two sides also spoke about the importance of the efforts by all sides to deescalate tensions, the danger of terror and the necessity of the global coalition’s uninterrupted commitment to confront terror.

The Foreign Minister Linde thanked the Kurdistan Region for its role in confronting terror and protecting and assisting the displaced people, in particulate the religious and ethnic communities.

President Nechirvan Barzani meets UN Special Representative Plasschaert

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, January 13, 2020

President Nechirvan Barzani offered Kurdistan Region’s readiness to help restore peace and stability in Iraq. The President also underlined that the legitimate grievances of the protesters should be recognized and taken into consideration.
In a meeting in Erbil with Ms. Jeanine Hennis- Plasschaert, The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq, on Monday January 13, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and the UN representative spoke about the recent developments and turmoil in Iraq and the region. The two sides also discussed, among many other issues, the ongoing demonstrations in Iraqi provinces and the danger of the resurgence of terrorism.
The situation in the region and the plans and roadmaps of the United Nations and the international community to support Iraq at this stage, the relations between Erbil and Baghdad and solutions to the outstanding issues through dialogue were also discussed.

President Nechirvan Barzani meets with Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdulmahdi

Erbil, 11 January, 2020

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdulmahdi reiterated that Iraq should not become a battleground for settling rivalries among regional and international powers. They also emphasized that Iraq’s relations with other countries must be on the bases of mutual interest and respect for the sovereignty of Iraq. They underlined that all sides should work together to prevent further escalation of the situation while restoring peace and stability, and that the interests of Iraq are the priority for all parties.

On Saturday, January 11, the Iraqi caretaker Prime Minister Adil Abdulmahdi arrived in Erbil and was received by President Nechirvan Barzani and they convened a meeting.

In the meeting, the situation in Iraq and the aftermath of the latest events and developments after the start of the new year were discussed. The tensions between the United States and Iran and the ongoing demonstrations in Iraq and the country’s relations with neighboring countries were also put to discussion. The two sides also discussed the pending issues between Baghdad and Erbil and ways to solve the problems.

The president and the prime minister also spoke about the importance of the continuation of international community’s cooperation and support for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in the war against terrorism. The risk of resurgence of terror and the recent movements of ISIS terrorists in Iraq, especially in the areas between the Peshmarga forces and Iraqi armed forces were also discussed. The two sides also reiterated the significance of cooperation and support between the Peshmarga and the Iraqi army.
